Wood Care & Finish
How do I clean my wood pieces?
You can hand wash them with soap and water. Be sure to treat your wood products with oil/wax afterwards. You’ll be able to tell when it needs it if the water isn’t beading off / it looks dull.
You can use a baking soda and water paste to lift any stains from your pieces.
White vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio can be used to sterilize your pieces.
Lemon and a coarse salt can be used to scrub your piece and remove any odors.
Can I clean my wood pieces in the dishwasher?
No. Wood pieces are not dishwasher safe, they are hand wash only. Pieces like the pizza cutter, ice cream scoop, coffee scoop etc. will unscrew from their handles if you wish to put those in the dishwasher. The elevated temperatures, extended water contact, and cycles will not only strip away the finish but has a high chance of splitting wood pieces.
How do I dry my wood pieces?
Pat your pieces dry first then stand cutting / charcuterie boards up on their side so they air dry evenly. Don’t stack bowls etc. to air dry.
How often should I re-oil / wax?
It varies! Depending on how often you use and wash your pieces. You can’t over-oil or wax your products, the wood in your pieces will stop absorbing it when its been fully saturated. You’ll be able to tell when it needs to be treated again, it’ll look dry and dull and water won’t bead off it as easily.
What products should I use to treat my wood pieces?
Always use food grade oils such as Mineral Oil. I prefer, and treat all pieces shown here, with Walrus Oil products.
Bowls and boards are finished with Cutting Board oil and Wood Wax: https://walrusoil.com/products/cutting-board-oil-and-wood-wax-bundle
All other wood products (vases, planters, etc.) are finished with Furniture Butter: https://walrusoil.com/collections/all/products/furniture-butter
Vegetable / Olive or any other cooking oils should not be used to treat your pieces, these oils will eventually turn rancid when soaked into wood pieces.
